FDA Approves 8 New Dietary Fibers

In a听听issued June听14, 2018, the FDA announced decisions on citizen petitions regarding additional dietary fibers. In addition, the FDA issued a new听听document allowing food and supplement manufacturers to count eight additional non-digestible carbohydrates when calculating the total amount of fiber per serving on a product label.

New Dietary Fibers:

  • mixed plant cell wall fibers (a broad category that includes fibers like sugar cane fiber and apple fiber, among many others);
  • arabinoxylan;
  • alginate;
  • inulin and inulin-type fructans;
  • high amylose starch (resistant starch 2);
  • galactooligosaccharide;
  • polydextrose; and
  • resistant maltodextrin/dextrin.

The final compliance dates for the Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts label final rule and the Serving Size final rule has been extended from July 26, 2018, to Jan. 1, 2020, for manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual food sales. Manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual food sales receive an extra year to comply鈥攗ntil Jan. 1, 2021.
